Spam is annoying. When my blog was online 2 days there were already Chinese spam bots along. Akismet is a standard plugin for WordPress. The anti-spam service is managed by the team behind WordPress. There are also variants for example Drupal. Akismet Plugin has so far been 100% successful on all sites.

When you installed WordPress for the very first time you may have noticed one of the default plug-ins known as Akismet. This plug-in is a handy tool that helps block spam from being posted as comments to your blog. In fact, it was one of the first such spam tools ever developed for WordPress. The only question is whether or not you should bother with it for your site.

Before answering that question let’s discuss how the plug-in actually works. Akismet blocks spam automatically using the collective effort of all the websites that have it installed. For example, let’s just say there were 1000 sites using the plug-in. Akismet would keep track of all the comments left on those various sites and track pingbacks. Using analysis of the collected data it determines what is most likely to be spam and what is probably legitimate. Those that appear to be spam get quarantined rather than ending up on your blog.

One of the things that make Akismet so effective is the fact that it gets stronger with every piece of data that’s added to the collection.
